Try the "Conserve memory" option in Mental Ray Translator options panel. What is the reason for the crashing? Have you looked at Windows "Event Viewer" to find what the crash was? It could help explain why.

You can change it in GeForce Experience on the driver page, click the 3 dots icon, top right. If you are somehow using GPU and you have NVidia in your laptop then make sure you are using the Creative driver and not the Game Ready driver. Had to do that a few times back in the day.

If you are a student, can you not just install latest 3DSMax, even 30 day trial and render using Arnold? Quite sure there was a Mental Ray to Arnold material conversion process to aid this.ĭoes Max+Mental crash on a simple scene like a spinning teapot? If no, start a new max scene and import/merge your crashing project into it. I don't use Max any more but I thought Mental Ray was always a CPU renderer.

I'm definetely not familiar enough with the software to try something like that). I've tried every possible fix I found on the web, but it seems that unless I render without using the GPU (which is likely to damage my laptop if I leave it rendering an high quality scene for hours due to the high temperatures of the cpu) I can't render without using Mental Ray (which our professor requires and despite HUNDREDS of complaints, she is not willing to negotiate.).Ĭan anyone help me in any way? I will fail this exam if I don't provide the render as requested (I also have to provide the whole project folder, so I think she might notice if I try to cheat. The professor gave us the the installation file of Mental Ray, although the "Nvidia Professional Application Manager" that was installed alongside the renderer clearly states that it's missing a license for both Mental Ray and Iray (although Iray works for some reason). I'm using 3ds Max 2018 on (what I suppose is) the last version that supported Mental Ray before it was discontinued. Unfortunately, if you want to use mental ray with Backburner to run a render farm, you will need to purchase licenses from NVIDIA.Hi, I'm an interior design student and for some reason our professor is obsessed with Mental Ray and wants us to use outdated software that crashes on 80% of our computers when trying to render. Note – the free license is good for a single stand-alone installation only, and does not include render-farm capabilities. The mental ray rendering plug in is available as a free download from NVIDIA and can be obtained here. Good news – you can still use it in 3ds Max 2018!

However, if you want to use the Lighting Analysis Assistant for 3ds Max, which is still included, you need to be using the mental ray engine. In fact, I’m finding the quality of the images, especially interior scenes, to be superior in many ways to what I could achieve with mental ray or ART. So I’ve spent the last few months getting up to speed on the Arnold engine, specifically for use in Revit to Max rendering workflows, and I’ve become much more comfortable with it than I was when 3ds Max 2018 was initially released. I’m the sort of person who tries to adapt to new technology whenever I can, and I don’t usually have much trouble leaving the past in the past. 3ds Max 2018 includes the Arnold 5.0 rendering engine, along with the Advanced Ray Trace (ART) renderer, and no longer includes the legacy mental ray renderer that so many people have been using for the last several years.
